First impressions are often lasting ones. Indeed, if you play your cards right, you can enjoy the benefits of what sociologists call the “Halo effect”. This means that if you are viewed positively within the critical first four minutes, the person you have met will likely assume that everything that you do is positive.

Studies tell us that four minutes are the crucial periods in which impressions are formed by someone we have just met. People tend to focus on what they see – the dress, the body movements, the ability to talk so fast or just slow, or even the voice tone. Most of the employees believe that those who look as if they care about themselves are more likely to care about their jobs. Research shows that physically attractive people are generally perceived by employers as intelligent, likable and credible. And here are some tips to win those crucial four minutes:

Look your best. Being and looking at your best signal your success. Studies have linked proper clothing tell that one can boost his self-esteem and may lead to getting the job you want.

Monitor your body language. The way you move will greatly influence an interviewer’s first impression of you. A study shows that 7 percent of any message about our feelings and attitudes come from the words we use; 38 percent from our voice; and, 55 percent is from our facial expressions. When the tone of the voice conflicts with your words, the listener will typically put more weight on the nonverbal message.

Say what you mean. Clinch that favorable first impression by making your words consistent with your body language and appearance. If they are not in sync, your mixed messages are bound to confuse the interviewer. You have to open and end the conversation on a positive note. Use the person’s name when talking; it is the best way to get and also keep his or her attention. And, avoid verbal clutter. Successful communicators talk in short sentences and even in bulleted items, while poor communicators tend to talk a paragraph. Also, ask some questions. Almost everyone likes to be asked questions, so do not be afraid of being the one who initiates the talk.

Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success. So, grab the advantages of taking those four crucial minutes playing in your palm and get the job you want can be yours.
