Beat That Fear of Public Speaking

Do you know what the number 1 reported fear in the US is? No it isn't heights, it isn't closed spaces, not even rattlesnakes. Surprisingly (or perhaps not), more Americans report that they fear public speaking than anything else in the world. In particular, making presentations in front of many people scares Americans the most, and this is probably rooted in corporate culture, where making presentations is already a norm.

When you are afraid of public speaking, it is easy to feel anxious at the mere thought of standing in front of everyone and delivering whatever information itis that you have. One becomes suddenly conscious about his/her own movement, voice, and even grammar. Miscues in pronunciation are taken with a heavy heart and it's easy for someone afraid of public speaking to just break down. This anxiety is never good for the public speaker, because it is a huge deterrent to his/her confidence and a bad sight for the audience as well.

The good thing about this is that most people who fear public speaking eventually settle down and get relax as they go on with their presentation. The biggest stumbling block, as they say, is the initial phase. Once you've already started, you will see that it isn't that bad and you can effectively use the energy from your anxiousness to put in some passion into your speech.

But for those who may not find this confidence immediately, there are certain things that you can do in order to up your confidence by a bit. First, remember that there is power in preparation. By being prepared for your speech, you get more confident that you can pull it off. By preparation, this also means a lot of practice. Try looking in front of the mirror and practice your speech from there.

If possible, you can also make an effort to meet your audience prior to your speech. Part of the anxiety stems from the absence of information of the speaker about his/her audience. You can reduce this anxiety by getting to know the people whom you are going to present to.
