We often experience calamities without warning. It is important to be ready when disaster strikes. Organize and arrange some of these supplies and details in advance, to save you and your loved ones from danger and help you withstand disasters with less stress. Be familiar with your vicinity and what disasters are likely to occur. It will help you plan accordingly. Check helpful websites for what to expect in your area. Create an emergency kit that will last for at least three days. Make sure it includes these necessities: water, a supply of non perishable food, can opener, batteries for your radio and flashlight, plastic or trash bags (for hygienic purposes), local maps, first-aid kit, whistle (to signal for help), wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities), dust mask. Consider some additional items depending on your family’s needs such as medicines, toys for pets, infant formula and diapers, extra eyeglasses, comfortable shoes, extra clothing, blankets or sleeping bags. Make a small version of your emergency kit for you to keep in the car or grab when in a hurry. This contains necessary items such as non perishable food, extra water, small first-aid kit, and a change of clothes. It is important to be familiar with your evacuation routes. Have more than one alternative to getting out of town quickly. Assign family meeting spots. Choose an area near your home where you can assemble. Choose another that is within the vicinity, in case everyone can’t get home. Have a third area that is out-of-town, should the need for your family to evacuate separately arises. Every member of your family should have a list of important contacts to carry with them. Be sure to include numbers for your office, your partner’s office, your children’s schools, doctors, and close family members. On the same emergency phone list, note any medical conditions you have. For your young children, record date of birth, address, and medical conditions. Have one contact person who is out-of-town. It can be a family member or a friend who can be a point person if your immediate family is separated. Have family meetings to ensure that everybody knows and understands the emergency plan.
