Making small talk isn‘t as easy as it seems. Sometimes it can be awkward and even painful. But if you can learn the art to it, you can be a good conversationalist. One rule is that you don‘t have to be radiant and dazzling, you just have to be nice. If you begin with simple, even obvious comments, it will make it easier for others. Here are some tips from communication specialists on how to steer clear of sticky, uncomfortable small-talk situations. Consider doing a little homework. Try to think of a few things to talk about in case the conversation runs dry. If you’ve previously met the person you are talking to, try to remember things about her. To keep the chat timely and bubbly, read some newspaper headlines and movie or book reviews. It can help give interesting topics to talk about. Remembering names can be hard as introductions tend to pass in a blur. The key: Slow down and stay focused. Try repeating the name twice after you’ve heard it.
